Anti static wrist strap - what to connect the crocodile clip to?
I'm inserting RAM (I bought on crucial.com for my vaio windows XP) and i apparently need to wear this anti static wrist band. It says on a website click the crocodile clip onto a grounded area. I'm not techonological at all so can anyone please give me an example of something to clip it to??? Help appreciated lots! Any simple solution to this is particularly welcome, as I am about as technological as a rubber glove.
Thank you!
First of all, in my opinion antistatic wrist bands are a bit of an overkill when building computers! I've been tinkering with the insides of computers since I was 4, and I'm now 17. I have a load of antistatic wristbands in my tool kit but never use them.
As long as you're not wearing synthetic clothes which build up static charges when they rub against carpet, etc, you should be fine with just tapping a grounded radiator pipe before you install the RAM.
Assuming you are in a place that uses grounded power outlets, you can also leave the 3-pin power lead plugged into the computer but with the switch on the back of the power supply flicked off. This keeps the case grounded so you won't build up any static charge if you keep touching a metal part of the case. If you really want to use the wristband then you can do this and clip it to a metal part of the case.
You could also just clip it to a radiator pipe or similar.
But honestly, I've been building computers for years and never had any problems from not using the wristbands. Its not like ultra-sensitive-hyper-delicate avionics equipment or anything (that stuff is scary... I've been in one of those dust-free sealed labs with airlocks and its own air supply and stuff... great stuff)!
