How to hand wind elastic thread onto a bobbin for shirring?
I have a Singer machine, its pretty old I think its a touch and sew model. It has the option to wind bobbins for you and that's all I have ever done. I found a tutorial for shirring fabric with elastic thread and went to try it out but I don't know how to hand wind a bobbin.
the machine looks like this-http://www.gonesewing.com/catalog/TouchAndSew.jpg
and this is what the bobbin looks like- http://www.sewingpartsdirect.com/images/products/detail/163131.1.jpg
I wrapped the thread around loosely as to not stretch the elastic and then put it back in the machine correctly. I tried to pull the bobbin thread up by moving the needle up and down but it wouldn't come up, so Im sure I hand wound it wrong.
You want to slightly (very slightly!) stretch the elastic thread as you're hand winding.. enough to evenly wind it on the bobbin. You may need to bypass the bobbin tension.
Not quite sure what's going on with your machine... I'm going to guess the bobbin wasn't evenly wound, so the needle couldn't pick up the thread. The needle may also be slightly damaged -- try a new one, and make sure it's right way around.
If you can find Bednar and Pugh-Gannon's Encyclopedia of Sewing Machine Techniques at the library, there is a very good section in there on elastic thread shirring.
